Takes a small sample of vehicle exhaust, dilutes it
with zero air at a constant dilution ratio,
and collects proportional samples in bags for
later analysis. The BMD's low dilution ratio
maximizes bag concentrations for measurement
by standard bag analyzers. A purified diluent
improves accuracy by eliminating the effect
of background pollutants on test results. Two
small critical flow venturis (CFV)s - one for
diluent and one for sample gas - provide a stable
and reliable dilution ratio. Electropolished
stainless-steel lines, new bag materials, and
heated components minimize HC off-gassing and
hang-up. A mass flow controller fills the sample
bags in proportion to the exhaust flow rate.
Software corrections for the effect of gas composition
ensure precise proportionality.

FEATURES
Critical flow venturis (CFVs) - one for diluent, one for sample gas -
provide a reliable and stable dilution ratio.
CFVs are less affected by gas composition than
are mass flow controllers. Pressure regulation
and temperature control keep the dilution ratio
constant. small dilution ratio maximizes sample-bag
concentrations, extending use of standard bag
analyzers for SULEV analysis. New materials
for sample bags eliminate systematic HC off-gassing
typical of Tedlar bags. Minimum internal plumbing
- short, small-diameter lines - minimize HC
hang-up and optimize response time. Heated sample
line and oven prevent condensation of the sample
before it is diluted. Contaminant-free diluent
(zero air or nitrogen) eliminates need for ambient-
bag measurement.
